Spreading the Knowledge!

Is it finding your niche or is it focusing your effort?

I think I am like every other writer I know (even though I don't "KNOW" that many...like, in the real life, know your face on the street sort of way), but I have ideas. Lots of ideas. An entire head full of ideas that I want to see in print someday.

But at this rate, I'll never get there. I get so caught up in the "next great idea" that I find myself having trouble nailing down and putting to bed "this great idea." It's a true story.

But my headline is begging a different question. My interests in romance writing span the entire world of genres and sub-genres. I have pirate stories I want to tell. I have demon-fighting Alpha male stories I want to tell. I have a regency charmer I want to tell. See where I'm going? Let's take that ENORMOUS leap of faith and assume that Haper Bennett eventually gets published. (Hoooooray!)

But what then? Do you hunker down in the genre you landed in and bang out a name for yourself for a few titles until you earn a right to move on to another genre? Or do you bounce to your next "big idea" and craft a great story and try to sell that one?

My guess, from following my favorite authors (I like to call them the Patroness Saints), is that you do, in fact, establish yourself for a few books in a particular sub-genre. Make your mark. Tell your stories. Get publishes/agents/editors used to you and the caliber of your work before moving on to new waters.

My thoughts, anyway.
